The Album

York Boulevard, Highland Park, August, 2007
Sea Is for Carpentry (Medium Sundial Recordings, January 2, 2026) is a 17-track instrumental album. Two recordings remain unchanged from sessions in 2012 and 2013 while building a studio inside a 1920s garage in Altadena, California. Afternoons were spent covered in sawdust, drywall chalk, and thermosetting cross-linked polymers, and running up and down pink, decomposing quartz trails in the foothills of the San Gabriel Mountains at dusk.Without a fixed plan, the body of the work began in the summer of 2021, continuing in Ojai from 2024 through the end of 2025. The album was mixed and sequenced between October and the first week of December of 2025.Post-rock, electronic, ambient, and experimental—the album’s influences include György Ligeti’s choral work Lux Aeterna, the motorik tempos of Can and Neu!, the time-worn tape loops by William Basinski, Boards of Canada, and soundscapes ranging from gentle Brian Eno meditations to Suicide-influenced hypnotic post-punk.The recordings layer guitars, bass, analog synthesizers, orchestral arrangements, live drums, and drum machines—built in part by folding his own recordings from across two decades into the present moment. Materials are brought into new relationships. Synchronicities in and out of phase—each remaining partly visible, as transparencies—overlapping, though not consumed.Mark Lewis of bands Idaho, Languis, West Indian Girl, and Omagaro Miguel plays drums on 4 tracks on the album.
